To prevent water from enetering your screened porch, you may get an extendable overhang, install a drain, or use a storm window.

A porch provides an additional relaxation area in your home. A screened porch is effective in keeping insects at bay and provides additional shade and ventilation. All you need to do is to protect it from harsh weather conditions. Rainwater is usually one problem, it can damage the flooring. To help prevent this, follow these guidelines on how you can prevent rainwater from entering your porch.

Get an extendable overhang

Perhaps the most cost-effective and the least difficult way to prevent a heavy downpour from flooding your screened porch is getting a sizeable overhang that can be extended. Though some intense tropical conditions with hevay rainfall and strong winds can get through this barrier, an extandable overhang technically keeps out rain that flows down vertically. A good distance for an extandable overhang should be at least several feet from the base roof of the screened porch, to provide additional protection. The moe costly ones can be difficult to install. If you decide on keeping the overhang temporarily, you would just untie the tarp then roll it up near the roof.

Install drains on the porch

Another method is installing a drain on the porch to hep flush out water that may penetrate during thunderstorms. Though this method does not necessarily prevent the water from entering, it minimizes possible damages done by the running water by draining it out. Rainwater can deteriorate the flooring conditions by wearing it out or discoloring it. On a wooden porch, just simply make a hole then install the drain by placing a gutter underneath. For a concrete porch, ask assistance from a home improvement expert.

Use storm windows

You may use storm windows for your screened porch. It has the same function as any window in a usual house which are designed to provide ventilation. The storm windows can be covered with an attachable glass to prevent rainwater from entering during harsh weather conditions. This can be done by attaching it to screen-porch windows using tiny locking clips. This can be a more costly alternative, but it's an effective means for water protection. Though some consider the screen-porch storm windows not as durable as the other usual house windows, they still offer one of the most effective means of protection for your screened porch.

The screened porch offers you shade and protection so it's just right to give it proper attention and protection methods from weather conditions as well. If your porch is well maintained, you can have many more years relaxing in it.
